WWIE held our Fourth Annual Latin Jazz Brunch on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Maggiano's Little Italy Restaurant, featuring Latin jazz band, Uno, Dos, Trio. Our keynote speaker was Ana Irma Rivera Lassen from Puerto Rico. Ms. Rivera Lassen is a pioneer civil and women’s rights advocate, author, law professor and attorney whose advocacy for the rights of women and Afro-Puerto Ricans has consistently been recognized by such organizations as the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the Puerto Rican Senate, and, most recently, the United Nations as a nominee to its Working Group on the Issue of Discrimination Against Women in Law and in Practice. Guests were greeted by our Mistress of Ceremony, Fox 26 Anchor, Melinda Spaulding, and a silent auction filled with a variety of amazing items.
WWIE's Third Annual Latin Jazz Brunch was held on Sunday, August 15th, 2010 at America's Restaurant. Our keynote speaker was the phenomenal Sonia Pierre, founder of The Movement for Dominican Republican Women of Haitian Descent, the 2006 recipient of The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, and the 2010 recipient of The U.S. Department of State's International Women of Courage Award.
Sunday, August 2nd, 2009 marked WWIE's Second Annual Latin Jazz Brunch, benefitting Afro-Latina women and girls living in Latin America. Our keynote speaker was Brigette Budier, an Afro-Nicaraguan member of the Central American Parliament who garnered national attention in Nicaragua as the Nicaraguan Rosa Parks as a result of her recent civil rights case.
On Sunday, October 19th, 2008, WWIE hosted its first annual Latin Jazz Brunch at Rice University. The event featured Yvette Modestin, founder and executive director of Encuentro Diaspora Afro as our keynote speaker, with Melinda Spaulding, co-anchor of Fox 26 News Houston, as our honorary chair and emcee. The event was a resounding success with over 100 people in attendance and $5,000 raised for grants.
In 2007, WWIE hosted a cocktail party fundraiser at Arco d’Oro, with the first round of drinks sponsored by Damon and Tanya Easter, and another cocktail party fundraiser at the Gite Gallery. Both fundraisers were extremely well attended, enabling WWIE to award $5,000.00 in grants to two organizations in Latin America.
On September 28 – October 1, 2006, WWIE had the pleasure to serve as a sponsor for the Second Annual Conference on Black Women in Central America organized by the Central America Black Organization. Afro-Latinas representing all areas of Central America came together in New York City, New York to discuss issues confronting women and girls and their communities and to develop working strategies to address them.
